I Wasn't There is the first novel written by Waleed Hashim. He started writing the novel when he was twelve years old and completed it by the time he was fourteen. The novel is written in Arabic and follows the story of a twelve year old girl living in an unnamed war ravaged country whilst she wars with herself. The novel shines light on an existential inner conflict between the girl's childhood and adulthood, her reality and the reality she sees and infers. 

 

Waleed Hashim is a spiritual teacher, novelist, lawyer and legal consultant. He started writing poetry, short stories and novels at a young age. I Wasn't There written between 1994 - 1996 and published in the year 1999 is widely considered his first novel and received widespread acclaim in Bahrain at the time of its publication due to the subject matter it tackles in relation with the writer's age at the time.
